Michael brings 18 years of design and construction experience to TC Design Architects, having worked in the past with architectural firms in both New York and London. He always takes a fresh, holistic and socially responsible approach to each project, but he also respects aggressive budgets and schedules. His passion and energy with people is a key motivator for any project. Michael has a bachelor’s of Architecture degree the University of the Witwatersrand. His key area of expertise lies in commercial and educational projects influenced largely by sustainable design principles.

Mark has been dedicated to design excellence and service throughout his 25 years of professional practice. He holds strong conceptual beliefs as to how people interface with the environment which he has endeavored to interpret into the fundamentals of all of the projects he has driven. He has been involved in many commercial, mixed-use and educational projects located around Southern Africa. TC Design Architects has competed successfully in design competitions over the years under his guidance. The company won a recent SAPOA best Office development in SA and best development overall, for which Mark acted as Principal. Mark has served on the local architectural Institute and is always available to tutor and moderate at the University when called on.

Mark has a bachelor’s of Architecture degree the University of the Witwatersrand. His key area of expertise lies in commercial and educational projects.


Mapula-PhalatsiMapula Phalatsi, B.BDGA , M.ARCH.PROF (NMMU), PDBA (GIBS), SACAP

Mapula has over ten years of experience in architecture. During the early years of her career she was exposed to residential and retail architecture. This has given her a solid understanding of the design, production, and management of complex projects, as well as working with community groups and local government. Mapula has a Master of Architecture (Professional) degree from the Nelson Mandela Municipality University. Her architectural background is complimented with a post-graduate qualification in business administration and several years of commercial experience. This dual competency, and her passion for people and their environments, make her a valuable contributor to TC Design Architects’ management team.


Carl-FourieCarl Fourie, B.ARCH (OFS) SACAP Project Manager SACPCMP

Carl has been with the company for over 35 years. He has a Bachelor’s of Architecture degree earned from the University of the Freestate and is a registered Professional Contracts Project Manager. His key area of expertise lies in commercial, industrial and leisure projects, with much of his energy being focused on fast tracking projects where he is able to deliver projects to a high standard, on time and within budget. Most of the projects he has been working on have been for Property Developers and he understands that buildings need to produce a certain yield to be sustainable. Apart from the end result being a good design, buildings need to be functional and fit for purpose. Carl heads the Project Management division of TC and this is his current focus.


Philip-ThornhillPhilip Thornhill, B.ARCH ( KZN) SACAP

Philip was schooled in KwaZulu-Natal and completed his architectural degree as well as masters at UKZN. In 2000 he joined TC Design Architects in the Johannesburg office and worked primarily on educational buildings from conception to completion. In 2006, on the back of large industrial projects in KZN, he relocated to Durban and has established an office specializing in industrial, office and retail projects. Philip offers clients an excellent personal service and he strives to deliver great buildings on time and within budget. This service has ultimately created long term relationships with clients as well as consultants. Philip’s future ambition is to be involved in sustainable developments and undertake work in the rest of Africa. He is also a proudly Unashamedly Ethical member.
